My Neighbor's Acre

Lambs 2248349 web

My Neighbor's Acre, a mutual care fund for members of NPSAS, was officially launched at the 1999 NPSAS Annual Winter Conference, receiving pledges of support from members in the form of an acre's worth of production (which is sold with the proceeds going into the fund), monetary pledges, and monetary donations. The fund was also a recipient of support from the Jesse Smith Noyes Foundation.

My Neighbor's Acre was a concept born from one NPSAS member's frustration and desire to help as he watched a fellow member struggle with economic hard times. The goal of the fund is to provide an economic bridge to NPSAS member farmers who need access to cash in emergencies.

My Neighbor's Acre has been able to help out a farmer who had been injured, lend our support to a farmer whose property was struck by a severe storm, alleviate the pain from the loss of a farm home to fire, assist with medical expenses and help pay the taxes on a member’s farm that might otherwise have been lost. We know from our own experience that those contributions not only express our care for one another, but enrich our own hearts. My Neighbor’s Acre serves to maintain and build our own community of folks who care about sustainable and organic agriculture.

NPSAS members can request assistance for My Neighbor's Acre for themselves or on behalf of a fellow NPSAS member simply by placing a phone call or writing to the NPSAS office or to one of the Board members. That's it! No forms, no hassle! The only thing asked of you in return is that when you are able, you too make a contribution back to the fund in the amount that was given you. No more money may be given until the original amount has been returned to the fund. However, it is not a loan in the sense that it must be repaid. This will ensure that the fund is not used as the primary financial protector, but as a temporary bridge.

The identity of recipients and donors will be kept confidential by NPSAS. Account activity (income and outflow) will be reported to the NPSAS membership.

Together, as a community, we have the opportunity to honor the past, to celebrate in the present and to give for the future. I hope you will join us.
