Who We Are

                                             NPSALogo CMYK copy

NPSAS is a 35-year-old grassroots educational organization and has worked to:

  •  Advocate for better federal and state farm/food policies
  •  help Northern Plains farmers convert their farms to organic systems,
  • increase the region's land grant research in organic and sustainable agriculture,
  • protect the integrity of the organic label,
  • promote healthy trade relationships in the organic industry, and
  • develop local food systems.

NPSAS's constituency is farm families and others interested in sustainable agriculture. Members are located primarily in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Montana, as well as neighboring states of Iowa, Wyoming, and Nebraska.

An important component of our education and outreach is the NPSAS Annual Winter Conference, a two-day event featuring keynotes, concurrent workshop sessions, beginning organic farming seminar, seed savers exchange, and trade show. The Summer Symposium and Farm Tour is held during the growing season touring an actual farm. NPSAS events concentrate on utilizing member farmers' knowledge and expertise. Foodstuffs served at all NPSAS events are locally sourced and organically produced.

NPSAS publishes a quarterly newsletter consisting of research, industry news, new educational resources, articles written by member producers, organizational news, events, marketing resources, and more. NPSAS also maintains a resource library, "how to" publications, and this website featuring position papers, articles, upcoming events, a directory of producers who market directly to consumers, extensive links to other resource sites, and more.

Membership is open and based upon yearly dues.

If you are interested in joining our mailing list, please Email Us . We hope our communications will keep you informed about and engaged in sustainable agriculture issues. We do not sell or give away our mailing lists.

"NPSAS does a commendable job of weaving together the human and environmental elements of complex farming issues, with a unique ability to ignite that which is most honorable and creative in the human spirit. Theirs is an articulate and impassioned voice deserving a wide audience."

Education
Building a healthy land...

In order to provide healthy food, we must first provide healthy soils — from the ground up.
NPSAS promotes educational opportunities for farming practices that help decrease soil erosion,
increase soil fertility, reduce the need for off-farm inputs, protect natural resources and encourage a diverse landscape.

NPSAS offers a wide variety of
educational opportunities including:
• Summer field days • 2-day Winter Conference
Plus educational workshops on:
• Crop rotation • Weed control • Soil fertility
• Organic and grassfed livestock (large & small)
• Gardening • Greenhouses • Farmers Market • CSA
• Marketing (direct and bulk) • Local food systems and more!

Building a healthy people...

NPSAS works with growers to increase the availability of fresh produce, quality grain products and farm-fresh animal
products.  We link concerned consumers with growers who market these foods.

Community
Building a connection...

NPSAS programs are built on a community network of farmers, ranchers, businesses, technical assistance providers and consumers.
We provide networking, coordination of support, information and education.

We offer peer-to-peer opportunities to brainstorm ideas and learn from other like-minded growers.

As Wendell Berry wrote,
“Eating is an agricultural act.”
NPSAS is creating a sustainable food system that brings together farmers, gardeners, educators, and local food lovers, as we all have a stake in ensuring agriculture has a healthy future.

Forming alliances enhances our message on local, state and federal policy.  We can make a greater difference when we combine efforts on critical rural issues.

Environment
Building a healthy future...
NPSAS advocates for farming practices that benefit the environment and human health.

NPSAS works directly with farmers to encourage better care of the land by increasing perennial crops, reducing chemical use and developing
environmentally beneficial livestock systems.

Revitalize our agricultural heritage by meeting the challenge to make a connection to the source of your food –
the land and the grower.

Make your future a healthy one.
Make your life a history of eating well.
